Water Supply Improvement Project Moves Forward

Funding Approved through the Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund

(RENO, Nev.) – Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) Board of Directors has authorized the issuance of an $8.5 million bond to the State of Nevada through Nevada’s Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund (DWSRF) for the construction of the Glendale Water Supply Improvement Project.  The new river intake structure at the Glendale Water Treatment Plant incorporates the community’s water supply needs, while meeting all environmental requirements including those pertaining to endangered species.

The purpose of the project is to replace the current rock and rubble diversion on the Truckee River with one that is more efficient and environmentally sensitive. The new structure will improve recreational boat and fish passage and integrate the intake profile into current flood control projects near the treatment facility. Due to these attributes, the project qualified for DWSRF funding. The project will also allow for more effective capture of the community’s drought reserves when river levels are low.  Truckee River water provides approximately 85 percent of the water supply to TMWA customers.

DWSRF is a federally subsidized loan program that provides low-cost financing to fund the construction of water facilities. The interest rate on the loan is expected to be 3.3 percent. TMWA’s Board of Directors approved funding at its January meeting.

Work to date includes: the completion of an extensive public process; selection of the community preferred design; the completion of the design work and plans; and approval of all federal and state construction permits.  Construction will begin this summer.
